Matan Portnoy

I’m Matan Portnoy, a filmmaker based in Tel Aviv.

Before film, I played competitive chess and reached the rank of Senior Candidate Master. Both turned out to be mostly sitting still and thinking ten moves ahead.

I made my first film at 17 and never found a good reason to stop. I direct, write, shoot and edit. My short film Entropy screened at more than 30 international festivals and won 10 awards. My music video for Nadav Guedj, Nothing To Worry About, has 7.5M views on YouTube.

I’m now in post-production on my first narrative feature, When Clouds Fall, an Israeli-Nepali co-production shot in the Himalayas, starring the late Alon Aboutboul. I co-wrote and co-directed it with Kehat Finkel.

I’ve made commercial and branded films for Kan 11, Riskified, Simply (formerly JoyTunes), VIA, YPO, the Israel Securities Authority and Atidim. In recent years I’ve brought AI into the same process, as another tool for making films.

As a photographer, I’ve shot for Artlist, the Schusterman Foundation and several advertising and PR agencies. My work has appeared in Yedioth Ahronoth, Maariv, Globes and Haaretz Exposure.
